SEO for tradies: how to get found on Google and in AI answers.

By Will O’Byrne·Guide·11 min read·Last updated 30 October 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

SEO for tradies means getting your business shown when locals search for your trade, in Google Maps, the organic results and AI answers. Start with a complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of reviews, then add a page for each service and suburb. Expect results over three to twelve months, at around A$890 to A$3,000+ a month if you hire help.

What SEO costs an Australian tradie: DIY at the start costs your time; a monthly local SEO retainer for one trade and a handful of suburbs is about A$890 to A$1,500 a month; a competitive metro trade across many suburbs is about A$1,500 to A$3,000 plus. Scalepoint SEO starts from A$890 a month, ex GST.

Most tradies hear about SEO from someone trying to sell it to them. This guide is the version without the pitch: what SEO actually is for a trade business, the parts you can do yourself this week, what it costs when you pay for help, how long it takes, and how to tell a good agency from a bad one. If you want the short version of any one question, the SEO for tradies FAQs answer each in a few paragraphs.

What SEO means for a trade business

Search engine optimisation is the work that gets your business shown, without paying per click, when someone searches for what you do. For a tradie, almost all of that is local. Nobody in Werribee wants a plumber from Brisbane, so the searches that matter look like “plumber near me”, “emergency electrician Footscray” or “roof restoration Geelong”.

Those searches show results in three places, and good SEO for tradies works on all three:

  • The map pack: the three businesses Google shows on a map above the website results. This is where most local calls come from, and it is driven by your Google Business Profile.
  • The organic results: the ordinary website listings below the map. These are driven by your website, its pages and the links pointing to it.
  • AI answers: Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot increasingly answer “who is a good electrician near me” directly. They pull from the same signals, plus the pages they find when they search the web on the user’s behalf.

Our page on local SEO explains why the map pack matters more than national rankings for nearly every trade.

How to do SEO for your trade business: the order that works

You do not need to do everything at once. This is the order we work in for clients, because each step makes the next one work harder.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your profile is the single most important SEO asset a tradie has. Claim and verify it, then fill in every field: your exact business name, the most accurate primary category (Plumber, Electrician, Roofing contractor), secondary categories for other services, a full services list, service areas, hours, and a description that says what you do and where. Add real photos of jobs, your van and your team, and keep adding them.

2. Build a review system, not a review push

Reviews are a large part of how Google judges prominence and how customers choose between the three businesses in the map pack. Ask after every finished job, by SMS, with a direct link, while the customer is still happy. Reply to every review, good or bad. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews sets out the system step by step.

3. Give every service and suburb its own page

A single “Services” page listing everything you do cannot rank for all of it. Build a page for each main service (hot water, switchboard upgrades, blocked drains) and pages for the suburbs you most want work from. Each page should say something specific: the jobs you do there, local conditions, photos from that area, and reviews from customers nearby. Templated pages with only the suburb name swapped get ignored.

4. Fix the technical basics

Your site needs to load fast on a phone, be readable by Google, and make calling you easy from every page. Most tradie sites lose more enquiries to slow pages and buried phone numbers than to rankings. Technical SEO covers speed, crawling, schema markup and the fixes that let everything else work.

5. Keep your details identical everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook and the main Australian directories. Mismatches make Google less sure the listings are the same business.

6. Earn local links and mentions

Links from real local and trade websites (suppliers, industry associations, local sporting clubs you sponsor, local news) tell Google you are an established business. Buying hundreds of cheap links does the opposite. Our link building uses Australian publications only.

7. Measure calls, not just rankings

Set up Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4 and call tracking so you know which pages and searches produce phone calls and form fills. Rankings are a means to an end. The number that matters is booked work.

How much does SEO cost for a tradie?

If you do the basics yourself, SEO costs time rather than money. If you pay for help, most Australian SEO retainers for local businesses run from around A$890 to A$3,000+ a month. The price depends on how competitive your trade is, how many suburbs you want to rank in, and how much work your website needs. Our full breakdown is in how much SEO costs in Australia.

What SEO typically costs an Australian tradie
SituationTypical approachTypical cost
Just starting, tight budgetDIY Google Business Profile, reviews and a simple siteYour time, plus a website
One trade, a handful of suburbsMonthly local SEO retainerAround A$890 to A$1,500/month
Competitive metro trade, many suburbsLocal SEO plus content and link buildingAround A$1,500 to A$3,000+/month
Scalepoint SEOMonth-to-month, everything in your nameFrom A$890/month, ex GST

Be wary of SEO sold for a couple of hundred dollars a month. It usually means directory listings and templated content, and undoing bad links later costs more than doing the work properly once.

How long does SEO take to work for tradies?

Profile fixes and reviews can move your Google Maps visibility within weeks, because Google can read them straight away. Website rankings usually build over three to six months. Steady, predictable enquiries from organic search tend to take six to twelve months, and longer in competitive trades in Melbourne and Sydney. The work compounds: a suburb page that ranks keeps producing enquiries long after it is written.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for tradies?

They do different jobs. Google Ads puts you at the top of the page within days and stops the day you stop paying. SEO is slow to start but keeps working without a per-click fee. If your diary is empty, start with ads. If you have steady work and want a lower cost per lead over time, invest in SEO. Most tradies who can afford both run ads for urgent, high-value searches (burst pipes, power outages, storm damage) while SEO builds, then move budget across as organic enquiries grow. The numbers are compared side by side in PPC vs SEO for local business.

Should a tradie hire an SEO agency?

Hire help when you are on the tools all day, when you work in a competitive area, or when you want to rank across many suburbs. Do it yourself while you are small and the market is quiet. Either way, the Google Business Profile, website, Search Console and analytics should always be in your name, so you keep everything if you leave.

How to choose an SEO agency for tradies

  • Prices on the page. If an agency will not tell you what it costs until a sales call, expect a pitch.
  • Month-to-month terms. Good SEO does not need a 12-month contract to hold you in place. See why we work as a no lock-in agency.
  • Accounts in your name: profile, website, analytics, and the reporting data.
  • Reports that show calls and enquiries, not just traffic graphs and keyword positions.
  • Experience with local service businesses, not only national brands.
  • No guaranteed number one rankings. Nobody can promise that honestly.

Our wider guide on how to choose a marketing agency for tradies covers contracts, ad spend and reporting in more detail.

Do tradies need a website, or is a Google Business Profile enough?

A strong profile alone can win some map pack calls, but it caps what SEO can do. Without a website you cannot rank in the organic results, cannot build pages for each service and suburb, and give Google less to judge your profile on. A simple, fast five to ten page site is enough for most tradies. Scalepoint builds websites from A$1,490, ex GST, and you own the site outright.

How tradies get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI tools

When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for “the best electrician in Geelong” or “how much should SEO cost for a tradie”, the tool runs its own web searches and builds an answer from the pages it finds. To be part of that answer, your business needs clear, specific pages that answer the questions people ask, consistent details across the web, real reviews, and mentions on other sites. The same work that ranks you on Google is what gets you cited by AI. Our AI search optimisation service focuses on exactly this.

The SEO tools tradies actually need

  • Google Business Profile: your map pack listing. Free.
  • Google Search Console: shows the searches you appear for and flags technical problems. Free.
  • Google Analytics 4: shows which pages turn visitors into calls and enquiries. Free.
  • Google Keyword Planner: shows how often people search for your trade in your area. Free with a Google Ads account.
  • Bing Places for Business: your listing on Bing and Microsoft Copilot. Free.
  • Our Local Pack Check Chrome extension: shows where you sit in the map pack on any Google search. Free.

Paid tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs and BrightLocal add competitor research and rank tracking. They are useful once SEO is a serious channel, not before.
