Is hipages worth it, and can you rely on hipages leads? Hipages can be a good way to generate leads, but a business that wants to grow cannot rely on the quality or quantity of them. Leads are shared with up to 3 businesses, volume depends on demand and your credits, and they stop when you stop paying. Use it alongside channels you own.
Plenty of Australian tradies have built their first year of work on hipages, and for good reason. It gets the phone ringing quickly, it costs nothing to the homeowner, and you can start quoting within days. The question this guide answers is a narrower one: once you are busy and want to grow, can you rely on hipages leads to carry the business? For most businesses the honest answer is no, not on their own.
Where hipages genuinely helps
- It solves the cold start. With no website, no reviews and no marketing, hipages can put real jobs in front of you while you build everything else.
- Competition is capped. hipages says each lead is capped at 3 businesses, which is a smaller pool than marketplaces with no limit on offers, such as Airtasker.
- No commission. hipages takes no cut of the job, so on a large job the fee can be small as a share of the invoice.
- It is low effort. You are not writing ads or managing campaigns, and the plan includes job management tools for quoting and invoicing.
Those are real advantages. For a new business, or to fill a quiet patch, hipages can be worth it. The trouble starts when it becomes the only way new customers find you.
Why you cannot rely on hipages leads to grow
Quality: you are one of three quotes
Every lead you accept is a lead up to two other businesses can accept too. The homeowner chooses, often after comparing prices, so your win rate depends on how fast you respond and how sharp your quote is. A lower win rate means every job you win also carries the cost of the leads you lost.
Quantity: the platform sets the volume
How many leads you see depends on how many homeowners post jobs in your trade and area, and on your plan: hipages lists Starter in 1 postcode, Advanced in 3, Premium in 5 and Platinum in 10. How many you can accept depends on your credits. hipages sets the credits for each lead by trade, location, job size and demand, and says those amounts can change daily, weekly or monthly. So the number of jobs you can win in a month is not really in your hands.
Cost and commitment
As of October 2026, the main plans cost A$139, A$249, A$449 or A$649 a month + GST, up from July 2026. They start on a 6-month introductory term and renew for 12 months, and the tradie terms allow an early termination fee equal to the fees left on the term if you cancel outside the 7-day cooling-off. Work out what that means per job with the hipages cost calculator.
The leads stop when you stop paying
Nothing you spend on hipages builds an asset you keep. Pause or cancel and the flow of work stops, with no rankings, ad history or customer list left behind. Platforms also change their rules or close: Oneflare shut on 30 June 2026 and its customers were sent to Airtasker.
The bigger risk: no website of your own
It is common for a small trade business to run on a phone, a ute and a platform profile, with no website at all. The ABS found that in 2024–25 only 39.8% of construction businesses had their own website or app, and only 44.6% of businesses with 0–4 staff (ABS, Characteristics of Australian Business 2024–25). Those figures cover employing businesses; sole traders without staff are not in them.
If hipages is your only presence online, that is a risk for four reasons:
- You own nothing. Your profile, your listing and your job history sit on someone else’s platform, under their terms.
- Your reviews live on hipages. Years of good feedback do not follow you to Google, where many customers check a business before they call.
- Customers who search your name find nothing. A past customer, a neighbour who saw your ute, a builder who wants your number: if they Google your business name and there is no website or Google Business Profile, the trail goes cold.
- Google Ads and Local SEO need somewhere to send people. Most Google Ads campaigns send clicks to a landing page, and suburb pages that rank in local search are pages on your own website. Without a site, the channels that bring exclusive leads are mostly closed to you.
What to do about it
You do not have to quit hipages to fix this. Keep it running for cash flow while you build a presence that is yours, in this order:
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. It is free and it is what shows in the map pack (use the Google Business Profile checklist).
- Start collecting Google reviews from every happy customer, including the ones who found you on hipages (how to get more Google reviews).
- Get a simple, fast website with your business name, licence, services, the suburbs you cover and a phone number that tracks calls.
- Track every enquiry by source, so you can compare cost per booked job on hipages with every other channel.
- Add Google Ads for your best suburbs and highest-value jobs, and build Local SEO suburb pages that earn enquiries with no per-lead fee.
- Taper hipages as the owned channels prove themselves, and note your renewal date: hipages says it reminds you at least 2 weeks before a term renews for 12 months.
| Hipages alone | Hipages plus channels you own | |
|---|---|---|
| Who else gets the lead | Up to 2 other businesses | Nobody, for enquiries from your own channels |
| Who controls volume | Platform demand and your credits | You: budget, suburbs and pages |
| Where your reviews live | Your hipages profile | Also your Google Business Profile |
| If you search your business name | A platform profile, at best | Your website and Google profile |
| When you stop paying hipages | The leads stop | Owned channels keep working |
The test is simple. If hipages switched you off tomorrow, how many enquiries would you still get next month? If the answer is close to none, the business is renting its growth.

Hipages is worth it as a way to generate leads, especially when you are starting out, but you cannot rely on hipages leads alone to grow: they are shared, the volume is set by the platform and your credits, and they stop when you stop paying. Build a website, a Google Business Profile and at least one owned channel alongside it.
